CHAPTER 9

Ichoked on the last sip of my tea as Grandmother uttered the last piece of the story.

“What? Come on.”

“What?” she asked before popping the last bite of her cookie into her mouth.

“Emma saw a vision of the past? Really?”

“The woman Emma saw while holding the pocket watch was the same woman she found in a family photograph.” Grandmother collected the plate and both of our mugs before she sauntered toward the kitchen.

I scrambled after her. “Maybe she only thinks they are the same person. I mean, how clear was her vision?”

“Clear enough to recognize the woman when she saw her in a photograph,” Grandmother said as she washed the dishes.

I crossed my arms and frowned down at the reddish tiles on the floor. It couldn’t be possible, right?

Grandmother dried her hands on a dish towel as she twisted to face me. “Are you ready to work on your room?”

“Actually, I’m going to hop in the shower first and change my clothes. I’m still in my pajamas.”

“That’s all right. We don’t mind days spent in jammies or lazy mornings around here.”

I pressed my lips together as I thought about it. I’d bet she’d sing a different tune when the school year hit. “Yeah, as long as I’m not late for school, right?”

“About that,” she said, slipping her arm around me as she guided me toward the stairs, “I wanted to talk with you about your senior year. But there will be plenty of time for that later. For now, you go ahead and get dressed, and I’ll meet you in your room when you’re ready.”

I crinkled my forehead at her statement as I climbed the stairs. I’d spotted a generously sized bathroom across the hall from my bedroom. I figured that was on purpose.

I flicked on the lights, illuminating the large space, complete with a claw-footed tub, separate glass shower, large sink with makeup vanity, and towel warmer. My bathroom back home wasn’t this nice.

A sticky note in the shape of a witch’s hat clung to the mirror over the sink. Fresh towels in the warmer, and extras in the closet.

I pulled down the informational sticky and stared at it for a moment. My grandmother seemed determined to help me settle in. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad here. So far, she’d been kind of interesting.

I’d dreaded living there, but in the short time I’d been there, I’d already started to feel comfortable. I wasn’t sure if it was all an act or not, but she didn’t hate my hair, or my quirky taste in clothes. And she had some interesting stories.

I pondered what she’d pull out of her hat next for Emma and Rose. Was she making this up as she went along, or had she heard this tale from somewhere? I’d have to ask her, but maybe after she’d finished telling it.

I found myself hurrying through my routine to get dressed, so I could hear more of the intriguing tale. After donning my clothes, I combed my wet hair when a knock sounded at the door.
